Pelvic pain clinic opening for women in the west
Women in the west will soon have access to more accessible health services, with the opening of a pelvic pain clinic at Sunshine and Bacchus Marsh later this year.
Operation Manager, Women’s Health, Kathleen Murphy said the expansion of services focusing on women’s health would help so many members of the community.
‘Following the pelvic pain inquiry, of the women surveyed 90 percent experience pain, and of that 50 percent on a daily basis. Pelvic pain is a huge issue, and something we’re happy to be able to support women with,’ Kathleen said.
The new clinics are designed to be a comprehensive service, bringing together specialists in a coordinated setting to address the many causes of pelvic pain. This may include but is not limited to dieticians, physiotherapists, psychologists, occupational therapists and pain specialists.
‘It's about helping women manage the pain that they have and then making that decision on the next steps for them, whether that's medical or surgical treatment that's needed,” Kathleen said.
‘Surgery may not always be the best treatment, so these pelvic pain clinics will be able to explore different options as first line treatment rather than waiting to see gynaecologists unnecessarily.’
For women experiencing pelvic pain, the GP is always your first step in the treatment process.
Plans are under way for the clinic to be opened in July. Please continue to seek advice from your GP, who will be able to make the relevant referrals to via the gynaecology outpatient clinic.
