For many people, the weekly supermarket shop or planning family meals can feel overwhelming. Which products are healthier? How do you read and compare food labels? And how can you make nutritious choices and good alternatives?

Western Health’s Melton Community Services dietetics team is helping to answer those questions by taking their expertise beyond the hospital walls and into the community. Through supermarket tours and cooking groups, dietitians are giving people the tools and confidence to make healthier choices every day.

Our Supermarket tours are held across Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Caroline Springs, the 90-minute guided tours give participants the chance to walk the aisles with a dietitian and gain practical advice on how to understand and compare food labels, identify healthier options, and shop with confidence.

The tours are free of charge and provide valuable hands-on learning directly in the environment where food choices are made, turning an everyday supermarket visit into an opportunity to build knowledge, confidence, and healthier habits.

In addition to supporting healthy shopping habits, Melton Community Services (MCS), dietitians also lead small cooking groups of up to eight participants. Each two-hour session includes preparing a nutritious meal together in the MCS kitchen, learning about a specific nutrition topic, and sharing the meal together or taking it home in provided containers.

These sessions not only build cooking skills but also create a supportive and social environment where participants can learn from one another.
