We have been nominated in the Health category, due to a wide range of programs and stellar efforts in environmental sustainability – some of which have led to a 35 per cent drop in the amount of waste it sends to landfill each year.
The PVC Recovery in Hospitals Program, developed in collaboration with Vinyl Council of Australia at Western Health, has led to great reduction outcomes and has been adopted by 24 health services across Australia.
Under this innovative program, Western Health created collect soft plastics used in medical packaging and recycle them into products such as furniture, bollards and even speed humps.
We’ve also slashed plastic waste thanks to recycling programs that turn medical plastic into furniture and garden hoses.
Hospitals departments including critical care services – operating theatres, intensive care units, day patient units and cardiac labs – produce about 20 per cent of hospital waste- much of it plastics.
With these innovative recycling programs, Western Health recycle six tonnes of wrapping and soft plastics each year which would otherwise have gone to landfill.
