New hospital taking shape
The Joan Kirner Women's & Children's Hospital (JKW&CH) is rapidly becoming a dominant building on the Sunshine site.
The new hospital is well on the way to completion, with the 9th floor – the top of the building – now in place, with Premier Daniel Andrews and Health Minister Jill Hennessy on hand to celebrate the 'Topping Out' ceremony in May.
Due to open in 2019, the new hospital will include 20 labour delivery rooms, 39 Special Care Nursery cots, 64 women's inpatient beds, 32 children's inpatient beds, four operating theatres and additional outpatient clinics.
The new hospital will consolidate inpatient and outpatient women's and children's services at Western Health and will enable more women and families in Melbourne's west to give birth and access children's services closer to home.
Over the next year, The Western Health Foundation has committed to raising over $1m to support the new JKW&CH, with elements including:
- Play spaces and outdoor spaces for children and families to enjoy.
- Enhancements to standard birthing suites to provide modern comforts
- Additional medical monitoring equipment for buirting suites
- Fitting out specialised spaces within the children's ward, such as adolescent lounge and education hub.
