The Infectious Diseases department is a team of specialists who see people with diseases caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses or fungus.
Infectious Diseases is a combined consultative service providing investigation and management to ID inpatients and other units within the health service to assist in the management of infection related problems of inpatients. We also provide3 Outpatient Clinics at Footscray Hospital for patients with infection related problems.
Our service includes:
A program to help minimize the inappropriate use of antibiotics within the health service.
Active consultant physician support to the nurses who are infection control practitioners for the health service, in their work to minimize the transfer of infection between patients, staff and visitors.
Education in the fields of infectious diseases, antibiotics and infection control to medical students from the University of Melbourne, in addition to postgraduate doctors, nursing and allied health staff from Western Health.
Conduct of research and audit projects related to the management of infections, with the goal of further improving the quality of service provided to patients with infection related problems.
