Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital offers a publicly funded homebirth maternity care option for women and birthing people that meet the eligibility criteria. The option for homebirth is an extension to the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) caseload midwifery program. MGP works within a collaborative framework to provide safe and sustainable maternity care options.
MGP enables each person’s maternity care to be seamless experience, you are cared for by the same midwife (primary midwife) throughout your pregnancy, during birth and in the early weeks at home with a new baby. This primary midwife works with a midwifery partner and within a small group of midwives.
Criteria for acceptance
Prior to being accepted into the homebirth program each person is assessed to confirm the suitability for the program.
The following are some of the criteria that is required for acceptance and participation in the homebirth program.
The women or birthing person lives with 30 mins travel time of Joan Kirner hospital. (Calculated on Waze set for 12noon on a weekday)
The pregnancy is singleton, uncomplicated with labour and birth occurring between 37-42 weeks gestation, and baby is in the head down position.
Recommended tests and investigations are completed.
The home environment is safe and suitable for a homebirth.
The family has Ambulance Victoria membership.

It is important to ensure that any person accepted into the program understands that the option of homebirth through this Western Health program may be withdrawn on clinical or environmental grounds at any time during the pregnancy or childbirth experience. If you become ineligible during your pregnancy your care can remain within the MGP program.
