Pregnancy Bookings

While most pregnancies and births are uncomplicated it is important you have your health and your baby's health checked as soon as you know or suspect you are pregnant. Your family doctor can provide this check for you and offer you initial pregnancy tests and investigations.

Midwives at Sunshine Hospital provide a thorough pregnancy booking appointment for you. This appointment is an important part of your pregnancy care. You will be asked to share your general, medical, pregnancy and birth (obstetric) history and provide results of the pregnancy tests and investigations your family doctor may have ordered for you. You will also have your options for pregnancy care discussed with you.

To receive a pregnancy booking with Western Health ask your family doctor to fax a referral for you to Women's Clinic at Sunshine Hospital.

While we prefer you book in through your family doctor you can also refer yourself by downloading and completing a Maternity Registration form and returning it to us:

Once your pregnancy referral is registered with us you will receive a pregnancy booking appointment letter.

Western Health uses the Victorian Maternity Record (VMR) to record your pregnancy care. The VMR is often referred to as your 'Orange Book'.

The VMR will be yours:

you will need to keep it safe
bring it to every pregnancy care appointment or hospital visit
bring it when you come in to have your baby

After the birth of your baby you will have a record of your pregnancy and your baby's birth to keep. Ensure you always take your VMR home with you.

Visitors from overseas

Western Health is a publicly funded hospital.

If you are an overseas visitor from a country who Australia does NOT have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with, you will be treated as a Medicare Ineligible Patient and will need to pay costs incurred for all medical treatment whilst at Western Health. This includes all 'outpatient' visits, as well as inpatient (admitted) care and accommodation.
