Naloxone Dispensing Machine Trial

Western Health is participating in a Victorian Government trial to improve community access to naloxone, a medication that temporarily reverses the effects of opioid overdose.

As part of this trial, a naloxone dispensing machine has been installed at Sunshine Hospital, providing free 24/7 access to naloxone nasal spray to help reverse opioid overdoses (including heroin, prescription opioids and synthetic opioids) until emergency medical care arrives.

The dispensing machine is located next to the Sunshine Mental Health and Wellbeing Centre, off Majorca Street. Community members can access naloxone directly from the machine without requiring a prescription, appointment or interaction with hospital staff. You can also view the location of the naloxone dispensing machine via this map.

The initiative aims to improve community access to naloxone, support overdose prevention and harm, as well as reducing stigma associated with substance use by encouraging access to health services and treatment.
