General Practice Integration Unit
About GPIU
The Western Health General Practice Integration Unit (GPIU) promotes an integrated, person-centred healthcare system that supports quality care and better health outcomes for our community.
The GPIU works to streamline clinical information systems and strengthen integration between primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare.
The Unit provides a weekday GP Query Service for general practitioners seeking advice or assistance in navigating Western Health services for their patients to improve:
- timely access to the right care
- bridging communication gaps
- facilitating links with hospital medical teams.
We also manage the Shared Maternity Care Program in partnership with the Western Health Women’s and Children’s Division, our GP affiliates, and through a Shared Maternity Care Collaborative with Mercy Hospital for Women, Northern Health, and The Royal Women’s Hospital.
Our GP Education Program delivers regular RACGP-endorsed sessions between February and November each year, in partnership with our Specialist, Medical and Allied Health teams and the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN), to build GP capability in managing chronic and complex care.
