Western Health is proud to launch our Best Experience: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Framework 2024 – 2028.
The Framework is a key step towards fostering a community and workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and supported.
The Framework was developed with our staff, consumers and their families, volunteers and other key stakeholders, who will help guide its implementation.
It outlines our shared vision for a fair and just health system that empowers all people to thrive.
“As a health service and an employer, we believe safety and inclusion is everyone’s responsibility and everyone’s business,” Western Health Chief Executive Professor Russell Harrison said.
“We will deliver on our commitments in this Framework, in partnership with our community, as is the Western way.”
The Framework was informed by a review of more than 60 documents, perspectives of approximately 80 people, including members of the Consumer Advisor Network, and externally validated best practice tools.
It contains key pillars that will help us make the structural and cultural shifts necessary to create a safe and inclusive environment where difference is celebrated.
The Framework is founded on the principles of respect, fairness, partnership and courage.
“All people should be treated equitably, and should be free to develop their personal abilities, pursue their professional careers and make choices about their lives without being limited by stereotypes or prejudices,” Chief Medical Officer Dr Abi Arul said.
As part of our Framework, Western Health recognises the importance of acknowledging First Nations peoples, the first people of Australia who have lived on this continent for upwards of 60,000 years.
By including their needs in this Framework, we affirm our commitment to equity, inclusion, and the shared journey toward reconciliation, which is essential for achieving equitable health outcomes.
Next steps
We will set up committees to develop action plans with the support of our staff, consumers and the broader community to ensure fairness and equity sits at the heart of our work.
