Families at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital can take much-needed respite in our new Ronald McDonald Family Room.
The bright, welcoming space on the Children’s Ward on Level 6 offers families access to a kitchen, donated snacks and refreshments, two computers, toys and books, and a lounge and dining area.
Young patients and their loved ones can also enjoy the colourful outdoor play area with expansive views, all without leaving the hospital.
The first patient to enjoy the space yesterday at the official opening was 10-year-old Gia Huy, together with his mother Thi Huong Nguyen and little brother Liam.
Chief Operating Officer John Ferraro said the opening of the new Family Room was an important milestone in Western Health’s history.
“We care for more than 4000 paediatric patients each year,” Mr Ferraro said.
“It’s wonderful to be able to provide them with access to this supportive non-clinical space where they can relax with their families, whether it’s reading a book, or playing outside, the Family Room will make a significant difference to their wellbeing.”
Mr Ferraro said the Family Room was the result of a fantastic partnership with Ronald McDonald House and thanked them for their support.
He also thanked Women’s and Children’s Divisional Director Lisa Smith, Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) Lucy Dove and Operations Manager Paediatrics and Newborn Services Adam Wood and their teams for their efforts.
Ronald McDonald House Victoria and Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Peter Bishop said he was pleased to be able to support families in Melbourne’s west.
“This is a special place where hundreds of families and caregivers will be able to have some ‘time out’ while still being close to their child in the hospital,” Mr Bishop said.
The Family Room at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s is the third Ronald McDonald Family Room in Victoria, with similar spaces at Monash Health and Wodonga Hospital.
