As part of the Australian Government’s national reform program, all state and territory health ministers agreed to the 
establishment of a national network of DonateLife agencies and hospital-based medical and nursing specialists. These agencies provide a coordinated approach to organ and tissue donation for transplantation. This collection of agencies, specialist hospital-based staff and the Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA) is known collectively as the DonateLife Network.
At 30 June 2013, the DonateLife Network comprised 255 DonateLife staff funded by the OTA in 72 hospitals across Australia and eight specialist organ and tissue donation agencies.
The role of the OTA is to implement, a nationally coordinated approach to organ and tissue donation for transplantation, in collaboration with states, territories, clinicians and the community sector. The OTA provides funding for DonateLife agencies and hospital- based medical and nursing specialists across the DonateLife Network in each state and territory. Western Health has dedicated medical and nursing donation specialists. They provide advice and assistance to clinical staff, donor family support and education coordination, both within the hospital and the community.
