Graduate Nursing Program
Program aim
The Graduate Nursing Program Year 1 is a comprehensive program which offers the option of an additional one year Grad+ Year 2, to assist you with transitioning to the role of registered nurse.
During this program graduates are supported by clinical expertise including Clinical Nurse Educators, Preceptors and Clinical Support Nurses.
It is a structured program of paid study days and debriefing sessions that focus on clinical decision-making, patient management and professional practice.
Grad + Year 2 is an extended supported graduate year offering further rotations in areas of your choice to further consolidate skills and knowledge. The extended program also provides a pathway to introduction to discovery and postgraduate studies.

Graduate Nursing Program structure
Graduate Nurse Program Year 1
- Program duration: 54 weeks (2 x 6 month rotations)
- Intakes: January (other intakes to be confirmed)
- Campus: Footscray, Sunshine, Williamstown & Bacchus Marsh
Induction / Orientation
- Structured Induction & Orientation Program:
- 1 Corporate/Hospital Orientation Day (Day 1)
- 2 Graduate Specific Study Days
Supernumerary days
- 5 Supernumerary Days (Rotation 1)
- 2 Supernumerary Days (Rotation 2)
Clinical support
- Assigned Preceptor
- Assigned ward based Clinical Nurse Educator / Clinical Support Nurse
- Nurse Unit Manager
Criteria for completion
- Satisfactory clinical hours
- Professional objectives for each rotation
- Satisfactory Performance Development Review for each rotation
- Development and delivery of a project for Professional Development purposes for each rotation
- Participation in Graduate Nurse Study Days
- A certificate will be presented on successful completion of the Graduate Nurse Program
Professional development days
- 1 Professional Development Day - in a clinical area of your choice
- 1 Professional Development Day - shadowing an ANUM / NIC
Study days and education sessions
- 2 Additional Study Days
- Regular graduate debrief sessions
- Monthly group debrief sessions and education sessions
Graduate Nursing Program Year 2 (optional)
- Participants can apply to participate in Grad + Year 2
- An extended supported graduate year that further assists with transitioning to the role of registered nurse
Beyond the Graduate Nursing Program
Academic subjects:
- Option to stream into areas of interest
- Participants offered further rotations in areas of their choice
- University accredited subjects at no cost. 2026 Grad+ Year 2 included two university accredited subjects. This may be subject to change.
Postgraduate opportunities:
- Pathway to further Postgraduate studies
- Registered Training Organisation providing staff with opportunities to complete accredited training on-site.

Apply to the GNMP PMCV Match and to Western Health and search for "2027 Graduate Nursing Program". Both steps must be competed for your application to be valid.
PMCV match results are published at 10 am on 16 September. Candidates will receive an email with their match outcome. Results available in the Applicant Portal (APS)
Acceptance Period is from 10 am on 16 September to 10am 18 September. Candidates who receive an allocation must log in to APS and accept their position within the acceptance period.

Recruitment process
Our recruitment process matches the GNMP PMCV timeline and eligibly criteria. You must apply to both PMCV and Western Health. To apply for a graduate nurse position at Western Health complete these three steps:
1. Register with PMCV

2. Apply online
Apply to Western Health online via our careers page and click on “2027 Graduate Nursing Program” using the online process. Each application must include:
- PMCV Number assigned through gnmp.pmcv.com.au
- Concise curriculum vitae including a table of all completed and upcoming undergraduate clinical placements and other work experience
- Nominate TWO clinical referees. PMCV will collect references
- A certified transcript of all results (key to be included)
- TWO recent summative clinical appraisals, including cover pages from recent adult acute placements; if no third-year adult acute placement was completed, one appraisal may be from a second-year adult acute placement and the other from any clinical placement.
3. PMCV one-way interview
Do I need to ask permission from my referees?
Yes, you must ask permission from your referees. Two clinical referee reports are required. Ask the referee for all the required contact information and check they won’t be on leave and are available at the time the reports are required. It is your responsibly to ensure the reports are submitted on time.
Clinical Placements & Appraisals
Two recent adult acute summative clinical appraisals from 3rd year including cover pages, from recent adult acute placements is preferred. However, if you do not have third year appraisals then the most recent acute or any other placement appraisal from 3rd or 2nd year can be submitted. In addition, provide us with an upcoming 3rd year placement list in your CV if applicable.
Do I have to apply through PMCV and Western Health?
Yes, you must create an account and log in to access the Applicant Portal through PMCV. Then apply to Western Health search for “2027 Graduate Nursing Program” on our careers page.
Is a cover letter required?
A cover letter is not required as part of your application. Please disregard the cover letter upload box that appears on the ‘My Documents’ page. We will only be accepting applications with a CV/resume; Academic Transcript; Clinical Appraisals.

I am an international student, can I still apply?
We accept applications that meet the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) eligibility criteria.

I am New Zealand (NZ) citizen or temporary resident of Australia, can I still apply?
NZ citizens or temporary residents who have a visa that grants the 'right to work' in Australia are eligible to apply.
I am an interstate applicant, can I still apply?
To be eligible to apply you must meet one of the criteria listed, refer to PMCV Eligible candidates:
My academic transcript will not have my final year results at the time I would like to lodge my application.
You can proceed with your application by uploading your most recent academic transcript.
If your third-year results are not released at the time of your application, you can still proceed with your application by uploading your most recent academic transcript. The recruitment team will be in contact for your final academic transcript.
Do academic transcripts need to be certified?
Yes, academic transcripts must be certified. To learn who is an authorised certifier visit: www.justice.vic.gov.au/certifiedcopies
Can I submit an electronic copy of my academic transcript ?
You can download an electronic copy of your official academic transcript and upload this onto the online recruitment portal.
This copy must include your university details.
Who can be my referees?
A referee must be a registered nurse who has more than one year of experience and that you have worked closely with in the capacity of student nurse. Roles accepted are:
- Clinical Nurse Educator
- Clinical Support Nurse
- Clinical Preceptor
What if I don't have two recent adult acute clinical appraisals?
Where two recent acute appraisals are not available at the time of your application, we will accept one recent adult acute assessment from 3rd year and one subacute assessment from 2nd or 3rd year.
What if my next clinical placement will be completed after the application closing date?
You can proceed to upload your online application with your most recent clinical appraisals before the closing date.
In your resume, outline the details of any future clinical placements including the date/ organisation / type of placement. The recruitment team will be in contact, if required.
What do my clinical appraisals need to include?
You are only required to submit your summative assessment; this includes preceptor comments (summative). Your summative assessment must also include the cover page with placement location / dates/ type of placement.
My appraisal was split over two locations, do I submit this as one or two appraisals?
Include them as one single appraisal.
I did not complete any of my placements at Western Health. Will this affect my application?
No. We understand that many of our applicants have studied at various locations and offered student placements with health providers other than Western Health.
Will I be contacted by Western Health for an interview?
No. PMCV are coordinating recorded online one-way video interviews. Refer to PMCV for more information.
I have missed the Western Health and PMCV application dates. Can I apply via email directly to Western Health?
No. Once the application dates closes, we will not be accepting any applications. Applications received via email will not be accepted.
Can I apply for a mid-year program?
Western Health recruits to fill graduate intakes by participating in only one matching process each year.
If I am successful how will rotations be allocated?
We offer two six-month clinical rotations. Successful applicants that are offered a position within our program will be given a preference form to nominate their preferred rotations. While we aim to give you one of your top five preferences, given the high demand for more popular areas, this is not guaranteed.
Grad+ Program (optional) If you participate in Grad+ Year 2 you will be offered two further rotations.
When will I find out if I am accepted into the program?
Match results are released at 10 am, 16 September 2026.
Acceptance Period: 10am 16 September - 10am 18 September
If you are successfully matched with Western Health, you will have 48 hours to accept the match. A member of the GNP team will also contact you.
