In 1994 the Western Health Breast Service was established as a small clinic seeing an average of five women a week. Today Western Health offers a best practice multidisciplinary breast service for over 120 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer each year, as well as supporting those women with a breast symptom who are diagnosed with a benign condition.
Some key achievements have ensured that women now have access to:
A comprehensive multidisciplinary service through a multidisciplinary clinic and regular multidisciplinary case conferencing
Best practice surgical and reconstructive techniques
A range of information resources in English and community languages
High quality breast care nurse service and access to psychosocial programs.
As well as strengthening its services for all women, the Breast Service has played particular attention to responding to the needs of young women with breast cancer, women with advanced breast cancer and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Specialist Breast Care Nurse Consultants (BCN) are involved in the care of all patients diagnosed with breast cancer. They provide information and support to patients and their families from diagnosis, through treatment and follow-up.
The BCN spends time with patients to outline & reiterate diagnosis information, planned treatments after discussion with consultant, and provide written information and links to support networks.
