While most pregnancies and births are uncomplicated it is important you have your health and your baby's health checked as soon as you know or suspect you are pregnant. Your family doctor or GP can provide this check for you and offer you initial pregnancy tests and investigations.
Midwives at either our Joan Kirner Campus or our Bacchus Marsh Campus will provide a thorough pregnancy booking appointment for you. This appointment is an important part of your pregnancy care. You will be asked to share your general, medical, pregnancy and birth (obstetric) history and provide results of the pregnancy tests and investigations your family doctor may have ordered for you. You will also have your options for pregnancy care discussed with you.
To receive a pregnancy booking with Western Health ask your family doctor or GP to fax a referral for you to Western Health. From your initial referral, you will be allocated to either Joan Kirner Women's and Children's at Sunshine Hospital or Bacchus Marsh Hospital for your pregnancy journey.
The location of your pregnancy care will be determined according to where you live and your requirement for specialised care.
Your GP can find information on the referral process on our Health Professionals pages.
Once your pregnancy referral is registered with us you will receive a pregnancy booking appointment letter notifying you of the campus you will attend for pregnancy, labour and birth care.
We look forward to meeting you and starting your pregnancy journey with you.
Your pregnancy records and EVE app
Western Health uses the Digital Pregnancy and Early Parenting App – EVE. EVE will keep a record your pregnancy care and also offers evidenced-based information regarding your antenatal and postnatal care for you and your baby. It also includes tools that can help and support you through your pregnancy and parenting journey. Watch a video about EVE to find out more.
The EVE App can be downloaded to your mobile phone during your booking appointment:
- You will receive an activation code to access EVE once you have attended your booking appointment (you can expect this the day after your booking appointment)
- Please bring your mobile phone to every pregnancy care appointment or hospital visit. The doctor or midwife seeing you will be able to talk you through relevant information in EVE related to where you are in your pregnancy.
- bring your mobile when you come in to have your baby
After the birth of your baby, EVE will need to be switched to 'postnatal mode' for you to continue to have access to relevant postnatal information and tools. You will have access to EVE for six months after the birth of your baby and then EVE will send you an email with all the information you have uploaded as a keepsake.
Visitors from overseas
Western Health is a publicly funded hospital.
If you are an overseas visitor from a country who Australia does NOT have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with, you will be treated as a Medicare Ineligible Patient and will need to pay costs incurred for all medical treatment while at Western Health. This includes all 'outpatient' visits, as well as inpatient (admitted) care and accommodation.
