What we do
The Perinatal Mental Health Service provides specialist mental health assessment and treatment for women in the perinatal period (the time for conception to the end of the first postnatal year) who are experiencing serious mental illness. Perinatal mental health is an outpatient service available to women who receive maternity carer at Joan Kirner Hospital. We also provide a consultation-liaison service to inpatients of Joan Kirner Hospital.

Birthing at Joan Kirner Hospital
Consenting to referral to the Perinatal Mental Health Service
Women during and after pregnancy (up to 6 months postpartum) who have a past history of, currently experiencing or emerging serious mental health concerns that are impacting on the individuals functioning
risks and/or the development and attachment to the child.
Loses e.g death of a baby, babies born with a significant health problem (either diagnosed antenatal or not), admission to neonatal intensive care units, serious personal medical illness in the postpartum period,
Women experiencing significant emotional distress or anxiety especially relating to the pregnancy, birth related medical procedures, child birth
Women who are patients of the local AMHS requiring specialty consultation around the perinatal period.

The Perinatal Mental Health Service is based at Joan Kirner Hospital in St Albans.
Referrals
The Service receives referrals from the maternity services at Joan Kirner Hospital. We do not accept external referrals.
